Why is car insurance so expensive compared to pet insurance?

Whenever you’re looking to get a new insurance deal it is always a good idea to spend a little time looking around and asking questions. If you have been reading my posts lately I have recommended that you call up the insurance companies and ask them all the questions that you have on your mind in order to make sure you understand what it is you are going to get so you’ll have a better understanding of what to compare the price to.

Recently I was in a situation where I wasn’t looking for pet insurance (which I normally am) but instead I was looking for a cheap insurance for young drivers as my oldest kid has just turned 16 and will need insurance for his new car. Normally dealing with insurance plans for pets I was a bit surprised when I saw the prices. I’m just glad he is going to pay for them on his own :)

But as a good parent I wanted to help him the best I could so I started looking for cheap car insurance brokers as they will normally be able to find you some great deals and will be well worth the fee that they are charging.

Now I know that car insurance for youngsters are pretty expensive but the reason I was so shocked was that normally I am looking at pet insurance plans ranging from $10 to maybe $80 at the top of the latter. Many premium packages are doesn’t even cost that much per month so paying several hundred dollars for car insurance is a little shocking to me.

Saving Your Pet from Harm

I know that you can find tons and tons of articles and reports about pet health and nutrition all over the place and I am probably not going to teach you anything you don’t already know. It is however sometimes required for us people to hear (or read) things more than once in order for them to sink in. If you’ve been a pet owner for many years you will probably already have your pet signed up for a pet insurance like the ones at AKC. But if you have just purchased your very first pet you might not have given it much thought and that is why I feel that it is important for me to tell you why it is that I find pet insurance to be an important (but costly) part of having a pet.

Now there are many reasons and I’ll not go into every little detail but one of the most important reasons and one that I feel outweighs the others by far, is the one of keeping your pet safe when it comes to being able to get the treatment required in the case of something happening to it. Whether it is as simple as a routine check at the VET, getting some shots or having to take in some medications it is important that you always have the pet insurance as a backup for any major economic challenges that you might have to face when providing your pet with the proper and required treatment. Let me ask you this… do you have that plan right now?

What about the VPI dog insurance?

You have probably already heard of the large pet insurance company called VPI. They have been one of the major pet insurance players for many years and because of this they are both loved and hated depending on who you ask.

If you’re a dog owner you have probably heard of the VPI dog health insurance option and maybe you’re already a customer of theirs. From an objective perspective you can fall into four different categories as a dog owner. Either you not yet a customer and you can only base your opinion on what other people (and the media) have told you and as we all know the bad news travels faster than the good news.

The second group is the dog owners that are customers with VPI and have one of their pet insurance packages but have yet to experience that you’ll need the coverage that they provides. Being in this group will probably have you being neither for nor against VPI.

Thirdly you can fall into the group that has been (or still is) a customer with VPI but who have experiences needing the services that you thought that you had paid for but where you didn’t get the coverage that you expected to get. This is the group that will be the loudest all around the Internet, the media and in the mouth-to-ear marketing arena. Where the next group of people will probably only tell one of two people about their experiences you’re more likely to tell 10-15 people about your bad experience.

The last group will be the pet owners that have had their pets become ill or get injured and where their VPI pet insurance did actually cover most or all of the cost of treatment and medication. You’ll be happy with the company and will probably stay on as a customer for years to come.

What is Trupanion Really?

If you’re a pet owner you might have heard of the company called Trupanion. I made a review of their pet insurance yesterday and I found that they have a very unique and interesting business model where they have chosen only to give pet insurance to puppies and kittens that has not yet turned 12 months.

So if you’re a pet owner with an older pet then Trupanion is not for you and you don’t need to read any further. Instead I suggest that you go take a look at the review I did of Embrace Pet Insurance not too long ago.

But back to Trupanion. My conclusion was that they have created a really great website with all the right features such as testimonials and insurance quote comparison tables. All that you would want as a pet owner. Naturally they didn’t include all available pet insurance companies but they had most of the major ones in the list.

The benefit for you as an owner of a puppy or kitten is that you will sign up with a company that is planning on insuring your pet for life. I know that might sound like a sales pitch but something made me feel like they meant it. I don’t know what it was.

On the other side of the table Trupanion will of cause want to insure young pets as they tend to have fewer illnesses and injuries than older pets which will benefit their profits. But go check out my review for more detailed information.

How Much Time Does An Animal Shelter Give Before They Put The Dog Up For Adoption

Usually when an animal shelter gets a dog there is a time limit that they have to have it before they put it up for adoption. For the most part it depends on the laws that are in your state. Some laws are 30 days some are only a few days. There are a few things that shelters have to make sure of before they put the dog up for adoption. One thing they have to do is to check them over. Make sure that they are all ok. Then they have to test the dog to make sure there isn’t any reason they need to put the dog down. For example if a dog has heart worms or congestive heart failure or even if the dog has cancer the animal shelter will put the dog down instead of allowing a new family to go through the pain of soon losing the animal. It is very important when the animal shelter gets a dog in that they check all this stuff out. More on pet insurance here.

Another thing that an animal shelter checks for before they allow a dog to be adopted out is their temperament. If the dog has a bad temper towards people they will not risk the dog being adopted out because someone could get hurt. Maybe the dog doesn’t have a temper towards adults, but it does have a temper towards children. This dog would not be suitable for a family that has kids around. The dog would have to be adopted out to an elderly couple that doesn’t have any children around. It’s a sad thing really, but we live in a cruel world where people raise dogs to be mean. If a dog is mean you don’t want to risk someone getting severely injured. In the summer time the shelters are usually full. This means all the dogs have a shortened length of time that they can be adopted out before they are put down. Where normally a shelter says if the dog isn’t adopted out before 10 days is up then on the 10th day the dog is put down. This is very cruel, but there are many other animals that have to have a place to go to get a chance to be adopted. In some cities they have what they call no kill shelters.

This gives the dogs more chance of survival and adoption. To find one of the no kill shelters near you look in the white pages of your phone book. No kill shelters tend to be a little cleaner and the animals a little better taken care of than a regular animal shelter. If you can’t find the right dog for you at an animal shelter or a no kill shelter then try looking in your local newspaper for free dogs. This saves dogs from having to be put in an animal shelter or a no kill shelter. Most likely if the dogs don’t get given away they will end up in the animal shelter or the no kill shelter. If for some reason your dog ran away and you think that your dog would be at an animal shelter you need to call the shelter. Sometimes the animal shelter puts the dog up for adoption about four or five days after the dog is brought in. So you need to contact your local animal shelter quickly to find out if your dog is there or not. If your dog by chance has a collar or a micro chip sometimes the animal shelter will post a bulletin in the newspaper so the owner can see that it is at the shelter.
